This Is First Time In World Cup History That Both Teams Scored Within 5 Minutes
Everybody say yeh yeh!

Notwithstanding that the Super Eagles of Nigeria lose 3 - 2 to Argentina, the team we support has qualified to the knock-out stages as runners up in Group F, they would face France 0n 30th.

Nigeria can guarantee their passage into the World Cup knockout stages with a draw when they lock horn in a crucial World Cup 2014 Group F match against tournament favourites, Argentina today, June 25 at 12:00 p.m. EDT (5pm Nigerian time) at Estádio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre.

Porto Alegre is close to the Argentine border, and thousands have already made the crossing into Brazil, many sleeping in buses and vans ahead of Wednesday’s game against Nigeria. Local media reports that more than 50,000 are expected, though less than half will have tickets to an event that could be a test for security authorities.

As predicted in the run-up to the tournament, Messi has been the key to success for Argentina, which has already qualified for the second round. Currently top of Group F after two scrappy wins which include the very late moment of magic from Lionel Messi in the game against Iran, it will stay there if it gets at least a point against Nigeria.

A draw would also suit the Nigerians, who would seal second place in the group and their first appearance in the knockout stages since 1998. They could also lose and still progress if Iran fails to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina in a match being played at the same time.

Coach Stephen Keshi stressed after his side’s last match, “the fighting spirit we showed was good”, Keshi said. "I never thought that we wouldn’t make the round of 16. I have the players.”

Keshi says nothing is wrong with a struggle to score but he is telling the players that the most important thing is team victory and not who scores. “We have worked on that and I have told them not to be selfish. Sometimes players show excessive hunger in the field. It is good but team victory is absolutely important,” Keshi said yesterday as he prepared the boys for the big clash with Argentina.

Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has also called his teammates not to be afraid of Argentina’s superstars and warned against over-excitement despite the chance to reach the last 16.

“Messi is a normal human being, a football player," he told reporters. "Of course we have to strategise and make our plans to make sure we get things done [against Argentina].”

John Obi Mikel is a booking away from suspension so will have to be careful, but its more likely that Nigeria will feature him in today's starting XI.

State public safety secretary Airton Michels has said that an additional 1,500 security officers will be drafted into Porto Alegre for Nigeria's game.

Will the fans confidently sing "#doro/dorobucci" and what are your predictions for today's match?

Did You Know?

  • This will be the fourth meeting involving Nigeria and Argentina at a FIFA World Cup; Argentina won the previous three to have taken place.
  • Nigeria have registered just one win in six previous attempts against Argentina in all competitions (D1 L4).
  • Nigeria have never won against a South American team at World Cup (L4).
  • Argentina have mustered just eight goals across the six matches played against Nigeria; an average of 1.3 per game.
  • Argentina have won 11 and lost just one of their last 14 World Cup group games (D2), scoring 27 and conceding just five in total in this run.
  • Peter Odemwingie, rated man of the match against Iran, has completed 91% of his passes and created two chances for his team mates, score  a goal. He has only managed to get 33% of his shots at goal on target.
  • Messi has only managed to get 29% of his attempted shots on target and managed to score two important goals so far. He has managed to create seven chances for his team mates however and has completed 85% of his passes.

  • Argentina are looking to win all three group games at a World Cup, as they managed in 2010 under Diego Maradona.
  • Nigeria won their first World Cup game in 10 outings against Bosnia and Herzegovina (D3 L6).
  • A record for the Super Eagles as they are the only team yet to concede a goal at world cup 2014.
  • Since losing their first game against African opposition at the World Cup (Cameroon in 1990), Argentina have won their last four from sides from that continent.

dear mr. president. this is not a joke. why dont you just divide nigeria and let just only the five igbo states go nothing more.i am not greedy thats why i am asking for just the five states or igbo states only. just let us go and nigeria will have more oil and bigger pupulation than us biafrans. while we leave peacefully with our little oil and little coal. at least biafra will be free of tribalism for instance. just let us go for peace sake. i dont buy nnamdi kanu's idea of biafra living with other ethnic groups because i dont want it to be another nigeria even though we are related by intermaraige in south east. we the igbo will not suffer if you do these. in the past we we did not suffer when we where living peacefully alone. i am not saying nnamdi kanu is greedy. he is a good a good man with vision or ideas to lead biafra no matter how big or small biafra(igbo land) is. he believes that biafran currency should be changed to something else and I totally agree with him. just let us go and watch us and if you see any significant change you can go ahead and divide the rest of that place and i said place because nigeria has expired or should i say that the experiment has expired and no one in that place is aware of it. if the smaller nations in Africa with out oil and coal can live peacefully like lesetho, swaziland, burundi and rawanda can exist as a nation why cant an igbo land or just the five igbo nation and the rest exist too as a nation called Biafra. we can still intermarry and exchange goods just like in the olden days it is a matter of transportaton. we the biafran can export coal and other matterial and the oduwans can export coco and other materials and the arewas can esxport what they have that we dont have others dont have. we can help each other out this way and they economy will grow. for instance now if you let the ibibio, ifik, anang to have thier own nation they will make income by just letting biafran good to pass through thier port and they can buy electricity from us biafrans and will buy water from them.it will be like another europe in that part of west africa. And finally all those igbos outside igbo land can get a a passport to come in to biafra if they wish to.
